How to Clean and Maintain a Stainless Steel IBC Tote
Stainless steel is easy to clean and hard to damage — which is exactly why cleaning problems are so often discovered late. Product residue under a gasket, a chlorinated sanitiser left in the heel of a tank, or a hardened valve seat will all do more long-term damage than the product ever did.

Why Stainless Steel Still Needs a Cleaning Procedure
Stainless steel resists corrosion because of a passive chromium-oxide layer that forms naturally on its surface. That layer is self-healing in air, but it is not indestructible: it needs oxygen to rebuild, and it is attacked by chlorides, by acids left standing, and by residue that traps moisture against the steel. A tank interior that is visually clean can still be biologically or chemically dirty in a weld crevice or under a gasket.
In food and pharmaceutical service the requirement is stricter: cleaning has to be repeatable and recorded, because the next batch carries the risk of the last one. The same discipline pays off in chemical service, where cross-contamination between grades is a quality-claim problem rather than a safety one.
Cleaning Methods and Typical Parameters
Manual wash and spray-ball CIP
For most plants, a four-step cycle covers both chemical and hygienic duty: pre-rinse to remove bulk product, alkaline wash, intermediate rinse, then an acid or passivation step and a final rinse. Where the tank has a manway and a spray device, circulation cleaning (CIP) replaces manual brushing and reaches the top head that operators cannot see.
Working ranges we see in practice: a 1–2% caustic (sodium hydroxide) solution at 60–80 °C circulated for 15–30 minutes, followed by a rinse to neutral, then a dilute acid wash — commonly 0.5–2% nitric or phosphoric — and a final rinse with water low in chlorides. Verify cleanliness by conductivity, pH and, where the application demands it, swab or rinse sampling. These are orientation values: your cleaning validation, not this article, defines the parameters for your product.
Two practical cautions. First, do not let chlorinated sanitisers stand in the tank — hypochlorite at concentration and temperature is the fastest way to pit both SS304 and SS316L. Second, do not steam-clean a tank that has been running chlorinated product without rinsing first; heat and chlorides together accelerate attack.
When to passivate
Passivation is the deliberate rebuilding of the passive layer, typically with nitric or citric acid formulations. ASTM A967 covers passivation methods and tests, and ASTM A380 covers cleaning, descaling and passivation of stainless steel parts more broadly. In practice you need passivation after any weld repair, after grinding or mechanical abrasion inside the tank, and after a period where the surface was exposed to iron contamination — for example carbon-steel dust from nearby fabrication work. Outcome can be checked with a ferroxyl test or a water-break test on the cleaned surface.
What to Replace, and When
Elastomers and valve seats age regardless of how well the tank is cleaned. Replacing them on a schedule is cheaper than a leak discovered mid-transfer. The intervals below reflect what we see across plants running stainless IBC totes; aggressive media, frequent steam cleaning and chlorinated sanitisers all shorten them.

Spare seals, gaskets and valve sets can ship with the tank order, and repeat customers usually reorder them against the original drawing so the second set fits without measuring. If you do not have a spares plan, ask for one — it is a five-minute conversation at order stage and avoids a stopped line later.
Inspection Points Most Operators Miss
- Weld seams near the base and under the frame, where product residue and moisture collect and cleaning fluids rarely reach.
- The underside of the bottom head, particularly on tanks standing on damp concrete or in wash bays.
- Valve port thread and weld — the most common weeping point after several thousand open-close cycles.
- Vent and vent filter, which can hold residue and restrict pressure equalisation during filling.
- The manway rim and clamp, where a slightly deformed rim guarantees a persistent gasket leak.
- Standing water inside frame tubes, a frequent source of rust streaks that are mistaken for shell corrosion.
Documentation for Food and Pharmaceutical Plants
For regulated production, the tank’s paperwork is part of its cleanliness case. Keep the EN 10204 3.1 material certificate, the leak-test record from the 100% water pressure test, the approved drawing and the cleaning logs together in one file per tank — auditors ask for them as a set. Repeat-build customers usually keep the drawing revision as the reference, so any change of fitting position or finish is traceable rather than assumed.
